Dim Sum at Johor (Gui Yuan Restoran)

Had seen a number of review on this dim sum restaurant and did not have the opportunity to try it out till today. We went into Johor Baru very early today at around 7am and we head straight to the Dim Sum restaurant.

On arrival, saw many people already there for their dim sum breakfast and we had to find a seat at the back ally.

The spread is reasonable with the normal har kow(虾饺), siew mai(烧卖), steam bao(包点) and chee cheong fun(猪肠粉). Special mention on the chee cheong fun, they have prawn and minced pork filling and they do it on the spot, however, I do not recommend this dish as it is not that nice…

DSC01677 Also, do not order the bao, the skin is thicker then the earth crust (should call it man tou (馒头) rather then bao) and if your not careful, you may miss the filling … it is so miserable!!

DSC01678The fried dish are all recommended dish that you must order, they are hot and crispy. Also, their porridge is good, although the potion is small but it is good enough to go along with all the dim sum.

Total we spend is RM36.80 for 3person, should say that the price is reasonable but not value for money. I will still visit this dim sum stall again but will limit to the normal dim sum and the fried dish.

Juicy Beef hor fun (rice noodle)

When you mention where is the best beef hor fun in town, many will reply Geylang Lor 9.

To me, Gaylang beef noodle is too over hype and with the influence of local media publicity, lots of people will agree that they serve the best beef hor fun in Singapore.

Ok, let me introduce the Geylang beef hor fun killer… the Bee Kai Seafood Restaurant

DSC01498 The zi char stall is just opposite Thomson Medical Center, I only found out this place only when my wife stay in that hospital.

The zi char stall is open for lunch till dinner and there are lots of people frequent this stall during meal time.

One of my favourite dish from this stall is non other then the beef hor fun.

DSC01501

The beef is super tender and it can just melt in your mouth with out much chewing, the gravy is super thick and there is a strong smell of the wok heat. It is something like burnt smell but it is more pleasant, the aroma from this smell really up the appetite of those who are not hungry. They are also very generous with the ingredients and it is one value of money dish,

The other dish that is highly recommended is the 排骨王 rice. The meat is super tender (I wonder how they make all these meat to be so tender…) and not very fat. It is coated with a generous serving of sweet and sour sauce. You can actually have the plain rice with the sweet and sour sauce, it is so appetizing!!

Hope that this stall will be there for good, it is so difficult to find such a nice zi char stall…

McDonalds Monopoly Gameplay

McDonalds surely hit the jackpot this time with this wonderful marketing ideal. With so many attractive price to be won and also  so many instant price to redeem, it sure attract people to frequent the golden arch and up the size of their meal in order to get the game piece. I am one of them …

Like many people, I am also eyeing the S$50,000 prize money and the iPod, and from the marketing point of view (my theory), the grand prize will be given out almost at the end of promotion in order to maximise the effectiveness of the campaign.

I went to the Sembawang drive-thru (near Chong Pang Camp) on 10 Nov around 10pm to get myself an upsize value meal. When I drive away, I ask my wife to check if they gave me the game piece. Non was given!! I went back to the counter to ask the Indian lady for the game piece and she said was given to me separately. I insist that non was given and told her the sequence of the things she handed over to me. Then she disappear into the counter and gave me 4pieces.

When I reached home and my friend told me that for upsize meal I am entitle 8pieces of game piece! Damn, I was conned away 4 chances of winning the S$50k!!

I do not know if there is any system in place so that the employee will not abuse their convenience to get the game card. If 1 do not give away game piece to 10 customer who order up size meal, they will have 80 pieces of game piece!!

Haiz… I am really a sucker … haha

Power Clay Pot Noodle

This ulu kopitiam is situated along bukit timah road, somewhere near mindef.

I do not know if there are other stall selling other food as this Zi Char stall does sell good clay pot noodle.

DSC01672

I always order the $5 as the potion is abit too much for me alone and I can share this with my wife. The ingredient is generous and you will be amazed by what they put in there with just $5 price tag to this dish!.

The yellow noodle is tender, gravy is thick, rich in flavour, the seafood is fresh, you can almost see them swimming in there (just kidding) especially the prawn and the squid, they are reasonable big, fresh and juicy. It also include green leafy vegetable and mushroom. Also, special mention on the yam, its so soft that you can just put it into your mouth and use your tongue to smash it. Yummy!! not forgetting an egg is added for the finishing touch.

See how the dish been served …

I will sure be back for more!!

Fried Hokkien Prawn mee

Went to the famous fried hokkien mee along Simon road. Was there around 5pm and there are not much people around. Understand that previously was the father doing the cooking but now the son is taking over the business.

So quickly pick a seat and order the hokkien mee …

DSC01637WOW! It really blow my mind off!! They use the thinner version of the rice noodle with the normal ‘mee’. The wetness is just nice, not too oily. The seafood they use is really fresh and the prawn damn … its so sweet! Even though I had ‘economical rice’ about 15min ago, I still can finish this plate without any difficulties! Damn … its good!!

We also notice that there is a satay stall setting up for business and the charcoal burning at the BBQ. The smell of the burning charcoal make me feel like having satay, so i ask the auntie are they ready for business and she said yes. Ordered 5 mutton and 5 pork.

While we were waiting for the satay, we notice that there is this uncle peeling the onion skin … DSC01639 and while he is taking a break, he took out a cigarette and start to puff! OMG! Those onion are naked!! The ash from the cigarette may have drop onto the metal tray and dirty the onion in the tray… ok, nevermind, maybe he will wash it later i thought … then the uncle start to pick the skinned onion and start to cut them into pieces using the table as the chopping board!! Wa lau, you know how dirty is the table?

DSC01640 This is the tissue I used to clean the table that I am sitting (just beside the uncle table). Then the satay stall aunty come out from the stall and just pick up the cut onion and place them into a container …

We waited for about 20min and seem like they are not ready, as I was rushing for time, I check with the aunty if they are ready and if not, I want to cancel the order. The uncle who is doing the BBQ said he is doing it now and the first round of satay is mine … So i wait for another 5min …

The 1st 5 stick of mutton satay arrived… took a bite and hey, its not bad! The meat is very juicy and they apply a layer of their secret sauce onto the satay and make it taste a little sweet which goes very well with the satay. Then they took another 5 stick of pork satay, the meat is just cooked as in just pass the raw stage and just enter into cooked stage. They should have BBQ the satay slightly longer …

Anyway, verdict of this trip… The fried hokkien mee is a must to order and the satay, make sure that they are really ready for business and then order from them and also, if possible, DO NOT eat those onion and cucumber…

Never judge the book by its cover

Receive this email about this person patronize a KFC outlet in Malaysia. KFC Malaysia is now promoting a new dish called ‘Shrimp Stix’ and by topping up RM1 to a normal 2pc plate, you will get 2 ‘Shrimp Stix’. See below for the promotion poster

KFCThe ‘Shrimp Stix does look big as compare to the chicken parts and the side dish on the same plate. Occupying almost half of the plate. if you to look closely, inside the ‘Shrimp Stix’, you can still see 2 shrimp stuff in it. Even knowing the disclaimer, the person went ahead to order the combo set and this is what he get …

Actual_size

2 pathetic piece of fried stick … the size of the item is not not even 50% of the size in the picture on the promotion poster.

Sometime when we see promotion leaflet/advertisement especially food item, we will usually give some ‘discount’ that the actual item will not be the same but, this can not always be the way. The company must do their part by providing information to be as accurate as possible, product used on the promotion material must be similar to the item they serve. Imagine, you see a burger photo in a restaurant, showing lettuce, tomato, pickle and a super thick beef patty but the actual burger does not have any of those and come with a ultra thin slice of meat patty. You make a complain and the manager will tell you that the picture is for illustration purpose only… Then the consumer have to suck thumb
